North Coast Property Market: Why Local Experts Are Optimistic Despite Economic Challenges

Leading experts highlight growth, resilience, and innovation at Pam Golding Ballito's property panel.

Panel Discussion Hosted by Pam Golding Ballito

At a recent property panel discussion property professionals discussed the promising outlook for the North Coast's property market, despite national economic pressures.

The panel featured:

  • Brian Wright – Founder of the Ballito UIP
  • Murray Collins – Owner of the Collins Group
  • Cobus Oelofse – CEO of the iLembe Chamber of Commerce

Despite challenges such as South Africa’s electricity crisis and socio-economic issues, the experts agreed that the North Coast is exceptionally well-positioned to thrive.

Off-the-Grid Living and Investment in Alternative Energy

Murray Collins highlighted the increasing momentum behind off-the-grid living. Many homeowners are now investing in solar and alternative energy systems, helping reduce reliance on Eskom and mitigate the impact of power outages.

He also pointed to ongoing private sector investment in public infrastructure, crediting successful public-private partnerships with the local municipality as essential to sustaining growth and improving quality of life in the region.

Ballito Property Market Shows Strong Growth

Brian Wright shared compelling data indicating a 43% increase in Ballito property values over the past five years. This trend is largely driven by “semigration” from Durban and movement from inland areas to the coast.

The North Coast continues to attract investors and residents alike, offering a high quality of life and strong long-term value.

Expanding Year-Round Tourism in Ballito

Cobus Oelofse discussed Ballito’s potential for year-round tourism growth. He pointed to local attractions like the Sebhudu Cave and the King Shaka heritage route as underdeveloped assets that could drive tourism beyond peak seasons.

He also emphasized the importance of Ballito’s growing industrial hubs, which signal the increasing role of manufacturing in the region's diversified economic future.

Potential for International Investment

Murray Collins noted growing interest from major international brands, including Club Med and Heineken. While specific details are yet to be released, their interest signals renewed confidence in the region's potential for global-scale investment and tourism development.

The Future of North Coast Development: A Bright Outlook

The panel concluded with an optimistic outlook for the North Coast’s continued development. One standout figure shared was the 80% increase in income to the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) over the last five years, reflecting strong economic momentum tied to rising investment and infrastructure improvements.

The North Coast remains a top destination for property and infrastructure investment—driven by its innovation in off-the-grid living, public-private collaboration, and its attractive coastal lifestyle.
